Birds of Paradise
In Hawaiian culture, birds are revered as possessing great wisdom, being the keepers of divine knowledge in many island legends. As such, native bird forms and wooden sculptures cascade from a soaring 15-foot ceiling and can also be found perched throughout the shop, where their bright, bold colors stand out against its rich wood interior.
Some of the birds you'll see on display at Hale Manu include:
- The ‘iwa, or frigatebird, whom Guests may recognize from the compass rose in the Maka‘ala lobby.
- The pueo, or short-eared brown owl, viewed as a protector and guardian in Hawaiian culture. Eagle-eyed Guests can spot pueo figures in the Waikolohe Valley and at ‘AMA’AMA restaurant.
- The ‘i‘iwi, or scarlet honey creeper, whose striking red-and-black plumage was prized by early bird hunters and feather workers.
- The ‘alae ‘ula, or Hawaiian moorhen, the namesake of the nightly Mo‘olelo Fireside Storytelling area, known in Hawaiian legend as the keeper of fire.
