Highlights
Special times are available just for families, teens/tweens and adults. Navigation and the StarsGaze through a powerful telescope while a local expert talks about the stars and their role in early navigation.
Ancient Polynesians traveled great distances across the Pacific Ocean, navigating without GPS, maps or high-tech equipment. For direction, they looked to clues from nature, such as:
- The rising and setting of the sun
- The position of the stars and moon
- Environmental factors, like ocean swells, winds, currents and birds
The stars played a vital role in early sea travel. Stars, unlike planets, remain in the same position throughout the year. Stars near the horizon are guiding stars, providing seafarers a sense of direction.
